Calculation of CO2 emission reductions

Today, scientists around the world say that if we do not start radical changes in the industry, the processes of air pollution will be irreversible! 

Here is an example of reducing emissions on one of our cases: “Industrial solar power plant 747 kW DC”.

The annual generation of FES on the object is 753.5 MWh 

Since the service life is 25 years, the total amount of electricity produced will be: 18,837.5 MWh. 

Emissions of thermal power plants per 1 MWh (brown coal) are 0.898 tons of carbon dioxide (excluding other harmful emissions into the atmosphere and greenhouse gases). That is to say, if we assume that the TPP produces 753.5 MWh per year, the emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will be: 676,643 tons. In 25 years – 16,916,075 tons. 

So the operation of this solar power plant reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 16,916,075 tons in 25 years, compared to thermal power plants, which generate electricity through coal combustion.

Fuel savings (coal), in this case, will be:

0.468 tons per 1 MWh; 

352,638 tons at 753.5 MWh – year;

 8,815.95 tons for 18,837.5 MWh – for 25 years.

Formulas for calculations of harmful emissions into the atmosphere:

Еco2  = 10-6 * kco2 * Qr * B. 

Еco2  is the gross emission of carbon dioxide

kco2   – carbon dioxide emission index (93740 g / GJ) 

Qr   – lower operating heat of fuel combustion (20.47 MJ / kg) 

B – fuel consumption per year (t) 

Coal costs for 1 MW of electricity generation: 

1000 kWh. electricity = 303 cubic meters of natural gas = 2.45 Gcal of thermal energy = 0.468 tons of coal = 1.32 cubic meters of wood.
